New Cool Wave is Top Flower at Horti Fair

New Cool Wave Pansies stole the show at the recent Amsterdam Horti Fair with all four new colours finishing in the top 11 places of the Interpolis House of Quality competition.

Cool Wave – the new series from PanAmerican Seed – has four colours currently: White, Yellow, Frost and Violet Wing. It finished third overall with an average score throughout the series of 9.24 out of 10 with the highest score coming from new Cool Wave Violet Wing (9.40). Competition was high with Violet Wing narrowly missing out on overall first place by just 0.08 points!

The Interpolis House of Quality award is an independently judged competition that recognises excellence in class. PanAmerican Seed, the breeder and developer of Cool Wave, is overjoyed with the result which is the first competition they have entered since the product went on sale at the beginning of the month.

Marketing manager for Europe Jeroen W. Ravensbergen said: “Cool Wave is our biggest product for 2012 and we have every confidence that it can live up to the expectation of being the new era of spreading Pansies.

“Cool Wave produces flowers that are almost 4cm in diameter in four stunning colours plus a mixture which includes Lemon. It can produce 60-75cm of trail on baskets and is ideal for groundcover too. This means one thing, Easy Spreading Colour!

“The introduction of this brand new series will be fully backed by across-the-board marketing support with branded pots, tags and other point of sale material available to all companies growing and selling the product. And don’t forget that being a Wave family member is credit enough. Now the consumer will have the opportunity to host Wave products in their garden all year round!”

Extremely tolerable of the cold – Cool Wave can handle temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius – and combined with the quickest response when the weather warms make this a fantastic product for the consumer, providing essential garden colour during the bleak winter months.

It is recommended to be grown as a larger plug size of 128 cell trays due to the vigorous nature of the plant. Trialling has suggested this plug size works out better in the long term as it produces earlier-to-market products.

Ravensbergen continued: “The plants on display at Horti Fair were grown at our Venhuizen research and development facility and were 26-weeks old. The 35 cm baskets had only 6 plants grown in them which considering the spread and the vigour of the product – is fantastic!”

Cool Wave was the only hanging basket item on display at the Horti Fair awards and scored highly for the plant habit and flower size. For full results go to http://www.hortifair.nl
