Biological control of Sciarid flies

Experiments at the FiBL in Switzerland (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) demonstrated that the control of Sciarid fly larvae by the nematode Steinernema feltiae was efficient (69-90% at an air temperature of 24°C. Under conditions above 28°C, the use of Neem oil could be a useful alternative. This biological pesticide is available as Azadirachtin (the tree species is Aaadirachta indica, family Metaceae). The use of the control agent Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis showed a lower control of 1-51%. David Pennell, Information, fax: 0041 628657-273, E-mail: info.suisse@fibl.org www.fibl.org
