Try a different Euphorbia?

Now that the seasonal Poinsettia season is just over, Euphorbia punicea (Jamaican Poinsettia) offered by OgelsbyTC could be an interesting alternative to the ordinary Poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima, for pot production.

It has several ornamental characteristics in common, producing a rosette of elliptical leaves and red bracts and golden-yellow flowers when open. It is a small shrub that is suitable for cultivation in 20 – 35 cm containers. It is a tough evergreen plant, heat and drought tolerant and ideal as an all-year-round or seasonal patio plant. In commercial container production plants should be well watered to maintain vigorous growth and flowering.

Cultivation trials will be required to discover the best means to obtain a compact, well-branched plant. Plants naturally branch after flowering and an extra light pinching will help branching. Euphorbia punica will grow of a wide variety of soils and substrates and while it is heat and drought tolerant it needs frost protection.
