New Yellow flowered Mandevilla

New Plants Motril SA, Salobreńa (Granada), Spain, is a leading propagator of Mandevilla/ Dipladenia in Europe. Their introduction of a yellow Mandevilla (Mandevilla x Diamantina® ‘Citrine’ 403) at IPM 2011, won them the award for innovation in the category tub plants (patio containers). The real novelty is the combination of a strong yellow flower colour with vigorous growth and strongly floriferous nature, characteristics in common with the Diamantina® series. ‘Citrine’ 403, brings the number of varieties in the Diamantina® series to over 12, distinguishing themselves in terms of flower colour and growth habit that is tailored to particular utilizations and markets. The Company works closely with the specialist nursery and breeder, SAS Lannes, Malause, France.

There is notable confusion between the use of the names Mandevilla, Dipladenia and Sundaville, the latter being a trade name for the series of varieties from from Suntory. The name Mandevilla is said to be a synonym for Dipladenia, the former stemming from the name of an English gardener Henry Mandeville. Despite this, there are genetic differences between ‘types’ that are very vigorous and vining with thinner more elliptical leaves and big flowers and those that have smaller, more rounded leathery and shiny leaves. The former are called as Mandevilla types and the latter Dipladenia types. The main differences arise from the species utilized with are mainly: boliviensis, sanderi, splendens and amabylis. There are some 56 Mandevilla/Dipladenia species, subspecies and varieties listed. Plants are native to Brazil and tropical central and South America.
