World’s first blue-flowered Verbascum

Verbascum 'Blue Lagoon'® is the world's first 'true-blue’ variety. Its flowers are of a mid-blue reminicient of Meconopsis. Verbascum was including in the Revflor project in Italy (2006-2010) to evaluate wild species that could be adapted to floricultural production as a cut-flower or pot plant.

‘Blue Lagoon’ was developed by Thompson & Morgan’s breeder Charles Valin from crossing yellow flowered species with deep violet flowered species from the Middle East. European species are yellow-flowered. After several generations, all the offspring from the crossing program had violet flowers except one, which had blue flowers. The new variety is being propagation in-vitro and plants are currently available in 7cm pots. ‘Blue Lagoon’ grows upright to a height of about 75cm and spread of 30cm. Verbascum is a low maintenance plant adapted to poor stony soils. Thompson & Morgan suggest planting alongside their yellow-flowered variety ‘Clementine’ to give maximum contrast in the garden.
