Cotton for consumers

Horticash, France, plans a marketing campaign for plants of Cotton (Gossypium arboreum) adapted for cultivation in 3 litre pots. The plants will produce large white, pink or yellow flowers in the summer, followed in the autumn by big seed-heads that when mature burst open to reveal white bolls of cotton around the seed. This is probably the first time that the Cotton plant has been proposed as a pot plant to the hobby market.

It is said that the potted plants will last for tens of years with the consumer, providing that the plants are protected overwinter in northerly climates. Various species of Gossypium are utilized in the commercial production of cotton and some varieties are more dwarf than others.

It is not revealed whether the plants selected and grown in Southern Europe for Horticash are dwarf cultivars or whether plant growth regulators are used in production. G. arboteretum varieties used commercial production will grow to 1m or more in height. Its typically Malvaceae flowers are normally yellowy-cream with reddish blotches on the base of the petals. The Horticash marketing campaign will include information on cotton fibres and derivatives.

Horticash is a large production group in France for pot plants and has 15 sales outlets throughout the Country. Further information: Horticash, Bouchemaine near Angers, France. Fax 0033 241721187, E-mail: accueil@horticash.fr www.horticash.com
