Drought tolerant colourful ground cover

A series of 6 new Delosperma hybrid varieties will be introduced by Eagle Plants Ltd, England, at the Four Oaks Show 6-7 September 2011. www.fouroaks-tradeshow.com

The varieties ‘Eye Candy’, Perfect Orange’, Pink Ribbon’, ‘White Pearl’, Rise and Shine’ and Carmen Lucia’ add new colours and colour combinations to this alpine plant is native to South Africa. The striking flowers have needle thin florets and the colouring of the petals of these new varieties gives a ‘star burst’ effect. Plants are highly floriferous and flower from May through to October, flowers closing up during the night. They are ground cover, drought tolerant perennials, ideal for covering sloping well draining land and rocky surfaces.

Delosperma is a genus in the Aizoaceae family of succulent plants with jelly-bean type leaves and compssite flowers that resemble Mesembryanthum. There are many different species and it appears that interspecific hybrids can be made quite easily if not spontaneously ocurring.

The new series have been bred in Japan and are made available as cuttings by McGregor Plant Sales Inc, California that is partnered with Florexpo SA in Costa Rica in order to supply unrooted cuttings worldwide, mainly of herbaceous perennials. The company now lists 900 different varieties. www.mcgregorplantsales.com For further information contact Eagle Plants Ltd, Fax: 0044 (0)1295 691007, E-mail –John Eagles: jason@eagleplants.com www.eagleplants.com
