Supplementary lighting improves Phalaenopsis production

Supplementary lighting anticipated flowering by an overall 6 days in Phalaenopsis orchid variety ‘Premium’ when applied during the 60 day phase of flower induction. It also influenced plant architecture, promoting stem branching and the production of a second flower stem. Supplementary lighting was provided by High Pressure Sodium lamps, control plants were grown under natural light conditions. The experiment was undertaken in Naples, Italy, in a heated greenhouse.
