Plantarium Novelties 2014 - Part I

 

Anisodontea ‘Brivingt’ (CORALIE)

Anisodontea ‘Brivingt’ (CORALIE) carries its vivid pink flowers from March to November and will do well in a pot or in the open ground. A compact, evergreen shrub with robust, stocky branches and small green leaves, Anisodontea prefers a warm and sunny spot. The plant was bred by Yves Le Guennec of André Briant Jeunes Plants near by Angers in France. The plant was submitted by André Briant Jeunes Plants, who will introduce it to the market in the course of 2015. PBR protected.

Viburnum tinus ‘Bridixhuit’ (ROYAL BABY)
Viburnum tinus ‘Bridixhuit’ (ROYAL BABY) is a miniature form of Viburnum tinus and was obtained by André Briant Jeunes Plants in France. The new cultivar is spherical in form and does not exceed a metre in height. The plant is covered with innumerable white flowers in autumn, arranged in umbels. The young wood has a reddish tint. ROYAL BABY is suitable for the smaller garden and will do well in a container on a terrace. This plant was submitted by André Briant Jeunes Plants from France, who put it on the market in 2014. PBR protected.
Weigela ‘WF-2009’ (WHITE LIGHTNING)

With variegated leaves and pink flowers, Weigela ‘WF-2009’ (WHITE LIGHTNING) will be a welcome addition to many gardens. This is a moderate grower which will not rise above 1.6 metres. The green leaves are variegated with yellow creamy edges. The trumpet-shaped blooms are pink as flowering starts, followed by white flowers in May-June. Bred by Tim Brotzman of Brotzman’s Nursery in Ohio (USA) and to be marketed starting from 2015 by Planthaven International Inc. of Santa Barbara, California. PBR protected. The plant was submitted to Plantarium by André Briant Jeunes Plants in France.

Agapanthus 'Golden Drop'
Agapanthus ‘Golden Drop’ is a low-growing variety, delivering an exceptionally rich display of light blue flowers. With its golden leaves Golden Drop is equally attractive when out of flower. Its height of around 25 cm makes this Agapanthus an easy subject for a pot on the terrace or a low-level garden border. Golden Drop will require protection if it is to stand outside over the winter. Golden Drop is a mutation of Agapanthus Streamline and was obtained by Hortex Trees and Shrubs of Auckland, New Zeeland. Van Vliet New Plants BV of Stroe introduced this PBR protected plant to the market in 2014 and submitted it to Plantarium.
Buddleja davidii ‘Podaras 9’ (FLUTTERBY PINK)
Buddleja davidii ‘Podaras 9’ (FLUTTERBY PINK) is a fantastic new introduction, with strong branches forming a slender pillar. FLUTTERBY PINK bears large pink flower plumes, as much as 45 cm long and 10 cm across. The feathery blooms do not sag but remain proudly erect. The leaves are dark green and last until the first frosts, while the plant continues to freely produce new blooms. FLUTTERBY PINK is certified sterile so it will not self-seed around the garden and can be used both as a containerised accent on the terrace or as a garden plant. The plant was bred at Cornell University (CCTEC) in the USA and was named in 2011. Van Vliet New Plants BV have been marketing this PBR protected plant since 2013 and were also responsible for submitting it to Plantarium.

Hebe ‘Jewel of the Nile'

'Jewel of the Nile' is a gem of a plant. The colour of the attractive foliage varies through the seasons so that the plant delivers right through the year. The leaves of "Jewel of the Nile" are green at the centre surrounded by broad yellow splashes and red edges. It blooms profusely from late spring to early summer, with ruby flowers. This is an ideal plant for tubs on a terrace or balcony, growing to 80 cm and able to withstand full sun. The plant is a mutation of Hebe "Flame" and was obtained by Stephen Burton of Cambridge, New Zealand. The plant was marketed by Van Vliet New Plants BV of Stroe in 2014 and they also submitted it to Plantarium. Plants can be obtained from Robert Wijsmann of Boskoop. PBR protected.
Parahebe catarractae ‘Avalanche’
Parahebe catarractae 'Avalanche' is a generously flowering shrub with numerous white flowers tumbling down the plant like the avalanche it is named for. "Avalanche" has indented, dark green, leathery leaves and is in bloom from May to September. The plant is fairly winter-hardy and evergreen (down to -12°C). "Avalanche" is an outstanding choice for tubs on a terrace or balcony, and  also does well planted out in the garden. It was bred by Stephen Burton of Annton Nursery, Cambridge, New Zealand. Van Vliet New Plants BV of Stroe introduced the plant to the market in 2013 and they also submitted it to Plantarium. PBR protected.

Viburnum plicatum ‘JWW 5’ (KILIMANJARO SUNRISE)

Viburnum plicatum ‘JWW 5’ (KILIMANJARO SUNRISE) has pale pink flowers in spring and carries masses of deep red berries in summer. And once the berries have gone, KILIMANDJARO SUNRISE provides a light late flowering before the plant attains its splendid red autumn colour. The plant has an excellent vertical habit allowing it to be easily trained into a pyramid. Jan Willem Wezelenburg Hazerswoude discovered this as a seedling and it was named in 2013. Plants are obtainable exclusively from Van Son & Koot (NL), van der Peijl Tuinplanten (NL), Willy de Nolf (BE), Heinje Baumschulen (GER) and Szmit (PL). The plant was submitted to Plantarium by Van Vliet New Plants BV of Stroe. PBR protected.
 
Cosmos atrosanguineus ‘Hamcoec’ (ECLIPSE)

Cosmos atrosanguineus ‘Hamcoec’ (ECLIPSE) is an unusual addition to the Florensis range of Cosmos. ECLIPSE is more compact in structure and the form of the branches is also improved. This is an attractive new arrival with its more generous flowering and its darker colour.
ECLIPSE can be started early under glass or later in the season in a container field for sale during the summer. This product is ideally suited to production in 12 cm pots or larger. Cosmos is not winter hardy and will require protection against frost. PBR protection has been applied for. ECLIPSE was bred by Dr Keith Hammett of New Zealand, named in 2014 and will be placed on the market in 2015 by Florensis BV of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. Florensis were also responsible for submitting the plant.

Salvia 'SAL 010-1' (EMBER'S WISH)

This year Florensis BV are introducing a unique collection of salvia hybrids suitable for cultivation in larger pots and containers under the name EMBER'S WISH. Salvia EMBER'S WISH produces a bushy plant with bright red flowers and has a highly exotic appearance.
This is an ideal plant for gardens and terraces with an exclusive image and a perfect garden presentation. Salvia 'SAL 010-1' (EMBER'S WISH) was bred by Plant Growers Australia Pty. of Victoria and will be introduced to the market in 2015 by Florensis BV of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, who also submitted it to Plantarium. Plant breeders’ rights have been applied for.

Carex oshimensis ‘Eversheen’ (EVERCOLOR)
Carex oshimensis ‘Eversheen’ (EVERCOLOR) is part of the EverColor® Carex Collection and was bred by Ireland's Pat Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald Nurseries (Ireland) are introducing this plant at Plantarium 2014. EVERCOLOR has variegated yellow and green leaves with a darker green at the edges. This is a healthy grower, evergreen and strikingly coloured. The plant grows to around 25 cm in height and spreads to 15 cm. It can withstand frost down to -25°C. Plant breeders’ rights have been applied for. The plant was submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein.
Dianella revoluta ‘Allyn Citation’ (COOLVISTA)
Dianella revoluta ‘Allyn Citation’ (COOLVISTA) is a quick-growing grass with plenty of creeping shoots and is ideal for a patio or balcony. With grey-blue leaves giving it a striking appearance the plant reaches some 60cm in height with a spread of around 30cm. The plant is winter hardy down to -5°C . Bred by Noel & Charles Jupp of Australia, the plant was first shown at IMP 2014 by Amigra Grasses & More of Honselersdijk and was submitted for the judging of novelties at Plantarium by Plantipp of IJsselstein. PBR protected.
Delosperma nubigenum
‘WOWDRW5’ (WHEELS OF WONDER VIOLET WONDER), ‘WOWDAY2’ (WHEELS OF WONDER FIRE WONDER) and ‘WOWDOY3’
(WHEELS OF WONDER ORANGE WONDER)

Three cultivars from the new Delosperma "Wheels of Wonder" series are being introduced at Plantarium 2014 by the Alkemade brothers of Lisse and Jos Cammeraat VOF of Boskoop. The series features plants with a novel range of colours. The plants were bred by Koichiro Nishikawa of FlorSaika in Japan. Wheels of Wonder Delosperma flowers extremely profusely, is fast growing and exhibits large and colourful flowers. The plants are drought-resistant and maintenance-free. The flowers are open during the day, but their size means that they still provide colour when they are closed in the evening.
WHEELS OF WONDER VIOLET WONDER has violet flowers with white centres. WHEELS OF WONDER FIRE WONDER carries red flowers with red centres and WHEELS OF WONDER ORANGE WONDER has orange flowers. Plantipp of IJsselstein submitted these plants, which are PBR protected.

Sedum ‘Blue Pearl’ (SUNSPARKLER)
This new Sedum is being introduced at Plantarium by Gebr. Alkemade (Lisse), Gootjes AllPlant (Heerhugowaard), Kebra Vaste Planten (Noordwijkerhout) and Kwekerij de Noordpoel (De Kwakel). The plant's outstanding characteristics include its robust, rounded purplish blue leaves, its strong growth habit and the generous production of deep pink flowers. SUNSPARKLER is winter hardy down to -35°C and reaches around 50cm in height and 25cm in width. The plant was bred by Chris Hansen of Garden Solutions of America. The plant was submitted for the judging of novelties at Plantarium by Plantipp of IJsselstein. Plant breeders’ rights have been applied for.
Rhodohypoxis ‘HIL200802’ (FAIRYTALE)
Rhodohypoxis ‘HIL200802’ (FAIRYTALE) makes a striking plant for a balcony or patio with its pinkish-red yellow-centred. The plant is in flower continuously from May to October, is resistant to disease and forms plenty of suckers. FAIRYTALE is quite comfortable in full sun, is winter hardy down to -5°C and reaches a height of around 25cm and a width of 25cm. Philip van Hilst of Kaatsheuvel developed this PBR protected plant. Remon Bakhuijzen (Hazerswoude dorp), Gebr Alkemade (Lisse) and Philip van Hilst (Kaatsheuvel) will introduce the plant at Plantarium 2014. The plant was submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein.
Berberis thunbergii ‘Lutin Rouge’
Berberis thunbergii ‘Lutin Rouge’ is compact in habit (height 40cm and width 15cm). The leaves appear intensely red in full sun but fresh green in shade. The plant is winter hardy down to -30°C . It was obtained by Pepiniere Jean-Pierre Hennebelle of France. About Plants (Zundert) and Vromans Kwekerijen (Biest-Houtakker) are introducing ‘Lutin Rouge’ at Plantarium 2014. The plant was submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein. PBR protected.
Choisya ‘Pmoore06’ (ROYAL LACE)
About Plants (Zundert) are introducing this outstanding Choisya at Plantarium. It was bred by Peter Moore from England. Choisya ‘Pmoore06’ (ROYAL LACE) is a compact shrub (75cm high and 75cm wide) with deeply incised lemon-coloured foliage. The gorgeously scented white flowers appear in the autumn. Winter hardy down to -20°C, and happy anywhere from full sun to semi-shaded spots. Plant breeders’ rights have been applied for. The plant was submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein.
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘H2002’ (MISS SAORI)

The double flowers of Hydrangea macrophylla ‘H2002’ (MISS SAORI) are creamy white with a deep pink fringe. The colour shades off to white in the centre of the flower, forming a lovely contrast with the darker leaves, which themselves turn claret red in autumn. MISS SAORI has an extended flowering period from June onwards. It flowers even on first-year wood and reaches a height of 100 cm with a spread of 100 cm. The ideal location is in sun or semi-shade. The plant does well in the border or in a pot, and it also provides exceptional cut flowers. MISS SAORI is also winter hardy down to -22°C.
Hydrangea MISS SAORI (‘H2002’PBR) has been submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein. Van Klaveren Plant (De Kwakel) are introducing the plant at Plantarium 2014. The Hydrangea was developed by Irie San of Japan. Plant breeders’ rights have been applied for.

Potentilla fruticosa ‘Lissdan’ (DANNY BOY)
Potentilla fruticosa ‘Lissdan’ (DANNY BOY) has vivid red flowers. The plant is a vigorous grower which reaches some 40cm in both height and width and enjoys a place in full sun or semi-shade. It is winter hardy down to -30°C. It has been bred by Liss Forest Nursery in England and is PBR protected. VC Hooftman Boomkwekerij of Boskoop are introducing DANNY BOY at Plantarium, and it was submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein.
Spiraea ‘Lonspi’ (SPARKLING CHAMPAGNE)

Spiraea ‘Lonspi’ (SPARKLING CHAMPAGNE) delivers decorative value in every season. There are purplish red shoots in spring, followed by attractive yellow flowers and large flowers in summer, with a further period of flowering in autumn. SPARKLING CHAMPAGNE prefers a location in full sun or semi-shade and is winter hardy down to -30°C. The plant reaches some 100cm in height and is 75cm in width. The breeder of this PBR protected plant is Peter Moore from England. The plant is being introduced at Plantarium by Boomkwekerij Lucassen of Vorden. The plant was submitted for the judging of novelties by Plantipp of IJsselstein.

Acer palmatum ‘Starfish’
Acer palmatum ‘Starfish’ has deeply incised leaves of an intense red colour. Its habit is compact and erect (height 200cm, width 75cm). ‘Starfish’ should be sited in sun or partial shade and is winter hardy down to -22°C. This PBR protected cultivar was obtained by Piet Vergeldt of Lottum. Kwekerij Son&Koot (Kaatsheuvel) are introducing ‘Starfish’ at Plantarium 2014 and Plantipp of IJsselstein have submitted it for the judging of novelties.
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vlasveld 02’ (CONFETTI)
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vlasveld 02’ (CONFETTI) is compact in habit (100cm high and 75cm wide), branches with great ease and flowers profusely. The lightly scented feathery white flowers are extremely striking. CONFETTI likes full sun or semi-shade and is winter hardy down to -30°C. The plant was bred by Peter Vlasveld of Boskoop, who is also introducing it at Plantarium 2014. Plantipp of IJsselstein have submitted the plant for the judging of novelties. PBR protected.
Dahlia ‘Hawaiian Dreams’ (MYSTIC FANTASY)
Dahlia ‘Hawaiian Dreams’ (MYSTIC FANTASY) is part of the Dahlia Mystic series. The flowers of MYSTIC FANTASY are an exotic flamingo pink shade while the leaves are dark. It was raised by Dr Keith Hammett of New Zealand and introduced at Plantarium 2014 by Gebr. Th. and W. Alkemade BV (Lisse), Remon Bakhuijzen (Hazerswoude) and Gootjes Allplant BV (Heerhugowaard). Plantipp of IJsselstein have submitted the plant for the judging of novelties. PBR protected.
